Waste Paper and Food Contact : A Proposal for a New Approach, 1997 Recycling Symposium Proceedings
For lack of any European legislation in the field of food packaging papers and boards national regulations and recommandations are applied and supplemented by numerous controls of the individual contaminants suspected in the finished material. Because of the lack of information about the toxicological effect induced by the whole compounds, suspected or not, a new approach is mandatory to ensure that food contact paper/board packaging do not endanger human health. Therefore, a global cytotoxicity test, which is used in France in an approval procedure of materials intended to come into contact with drinking water, has been applied to papers and boards. It makes possible the classification of paper/board samples according to their toxicological quality, because of its high sensitivity and its global feature. It is a valuable tool for health Authorities and for manufacturers, since it evaluates the efficiency of the treatments.
