Classification and Behavior of Stickies in Recycle Pulp, 1997 Recycling Symposium Proceedings
As recycled fiber content in paper and paperboard products continues to increase, the introduction of stickies and similar contaminants to the furnish is increasing as well. Problems commonly associated with stickies, such as runnability and downgrading, have been estimated to cost the industry $700 million per year. These problems are caused, in part, by the elusive nature of stickies, and their tendencies to reagglomerate at various points in the mill.
In order to better understand the behavior of stickies in the mill environment, research has been initiated to track the stickies, qualitatively and quantitatively, from the repulper throughout the stock preparation system. From the conclusions of this research, strategies for sticky removal and/or dispersion processes will be proposed based on where the stickies are, the amount of stickies present, whether they are pure or in mixtures, how their properties influence their behavior, and the effect of process chemicals. The research is in it’s initial stages and this poster will give background and some preliminary results.
