In recent years, the percentage of recycled fiber found in sources of recycled fiber has been increasing. This means that the quality and behavior of traditional recycled fiber sources is changing. Old corrugated containers (OCC) and old newsprint (ONP) are two of the most utilized recycled fiber sources which often contain recycled fibers. The additional recycled fiber content slows paper or board machine drainage rates, resulting in decreased production. Hemicellulases and cellulases have been shown to improve the drainage of recycled fibers. This study focused on freeness improvement of OCC and ONP for use in the manufacture of 100% recycled board material. The main variables were enzyme (Pergalase A40) dose, refining level, and point of enzyme addition. The results showed that freeness improvement can be achieved while strength properties are maintained under certain conditions.
