Use of Fractionating Filters to Increase Fiber Yield in Secondary Fiber Systems, 1997 Recycling Symposium Proceedings

Even efficient secondary fiber systems lose some fiber from the process. The increasing cost of waste paper has made minimization of fiber loss an important economic issue for all systems utilizing waste paper as a raw material. Improving the yield of fiber involves a balance of production rate, contaminant removal, raw material quality, and equipment capital and operating costs.

In addition to fiber savings, removing usable fiber with a fractionating filter can improve clarifier operation, reduce chemical cost, and reduce the amount of sludge to be disposed.

There follows a description of fractionating filters, economic justification, and some practical examples of their application for washer or thickener effluents, sludges, and excess paper machine white water.
