Search for Sludge Disposal Solutions, 1998 Recycling Symposium Proceedings
American paper and board production capacity is now at or near 100 millions tons per year, according to the American Forest and Paper Association (AF&PA). And American papermakers are now generating at least 5.6 million dry tons of pulping and recycling rejects each year, according to the National Council of the Paper Industry for Air and Stream Improvement (NCASI). Whether it is called fiber rejects, fiber clay or just plain sludge, it is an enormous disposal problem and, while the industry’s traditional disposal methods grow steadily more problematic, the search is on for new disposal options.
