Measurement of Long-Range Hydrophobic Attraction Forces and Their Relationship to Deinking Flotation: Part III. Simultaneous Bubble and Paricle Measurements, 1998 Recycling Symposium Proceedings

An apparatus is described for simultaneously measuring the movements of a particle and a bubble surface as the bubble/particle pair are brought toward each other and allowed to interact and attach. Results of trials where particle- only movement was measured, and where bubble-only movement was measured, are reviewed. A series of trials is presented where simultaneous measurements were made of both particle and bubble surface movement. The reproducibility of repeat trials of the same system, and of two identical but different systems, is shown to be excellent. It is seen that during the attachment event both the particle and the bubble surface move together, and over relatively long distances. To our knowledge these are the first reported measurements of bubble surface movements and interactions.
