Development of Pressure Sensitive Adhesive Stamps Requirements, 1998 Recycling Symposium Proceedings
Although the United States Postal Service dates back to 1782 and the first general issue of gummed postage stamps was introduced in 1847, it was not until 1974, that the first pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) based stamp (no-lick stamp), a pm-canceled 10 Cent “Peace on Earth”, was issued. While the general public liked the stamps, they were discontinued due to complaints by philatelists regarding several adhesive related problems. In 1987, initiatives were taken to respond to public demand to again issue “NO-LICK” stamps as well as addressing the issues of convenience and hygiene. In conjunction with four major pressure sensitive adhesive product manufacturers, the U.S. Postal Service took up the challenge and responded to public demand, meeting the requirements of the philatelic community, as well as, automated mail processing and environmental requirements.
