Effect of a Countercurrent Flow Water System on Stickies in a Mixed Office Waste Recycled Fiber Mill, 1998 Recycling Symposium Proceedings
The handling of the water streams within a recycled fiber system is critical to the overall efficiency of a given system. A mixed office waste system recently started up that uses a countercurrent flow water system in which the only water replaced is that lost to the pulp dryer. Stickies are the single most important contaminant for any mixed office waste paper recycler, and it is the removal of this contaminant that is studied. Stickies will get into the white water, no matter how good the main system’s removal is. Counts per 100 gallons will vary from < 10="" to="" hundreds.="" points="" within="" such="" a="" system="" where="" difficulties="" can="" arise="" are="" where="" filtrates/pressates,="" clarified="" waters="" and="" spills="" enter="" the="" water="" system.="" barrier="" filters="" can="" remove="" over="" 95%="" of="" stickies="" contaminating="" the="" white="" water="" while="" dedicated="" systems="" of="" scalping="" filters="" and="" cleaners="" can="" remove="" 80="" to="" 90%.="" the="" careful="" application="" of="" appropriately="" placed="" equipment="" within="" the="" water="" system="" can="" improve="" overall="" system="" quality="" to="" near="" virgin="" fiber="">
