We have developed a compact dispersion module that is based on a conical DIVA™ disperser. Due to the large effective dispersion area in a conical disperser, one could assume a longer residence time for the pulp in-between the rotor and the stator, and therefore a higher impact probability for an ink or sticky particle to be dispersed.
The conical disperser has been evaluated in a newsprint mill installation. When compared to available literature the result indicates that for a given specific energy consumption, we were able to reach a high ink speck area reduction without severely affecting the pulp drainage properties. It is very difficult to measure stickies properly. However, complementary pilot plant trials indicated that the stickies reduction with the conical disperser is at least on a comparable level with flat disc dispersers.
