Deinked Market Pulp: An Economic Lesson, 1999 Recycling Symposium Proceedings
James R. Thompson
Thompson Avant International Inc.
This presentation on the economic lesson in the industry’s experience with deinked market pulp (DMP) mills in the 1990s will outline how companies rushed to build DMP mills on the basis of false expectations of the paper recycling movement. Inadequate market research led to building far more DMP capacity than the paper industry could absorb. The result has been very low operating rates, closures and bankruptcies among DMP operations. The presentation will include citations of the facilities built and the projects that failed, with some observations about the probable future of the DMP segment.
