Millwide Systems: A View to the 1990's, 1990 TAPPI Conference Proceedings
The paper industry has reached a point where major changes will occur in the way it applies information technology. Significant advantages (i.e., improved margins, lower inventories, and better customer service) can be gained by mastering these changes. The advantages will be the result of (1) open systems which will allow a shift back to the selection of software solutions based on functionality rather than a need to reduce the risk of integration; (2) systems that are more robust, more flexible, and better tuned to the natural organization of labor and processes; and (3 ) significant steps taken toward developing common user interfaces, thus reducing the training effort and making it easier for an operator to work across multiple systems. In addition, the use of information as a basis of integration will make it easier to create enterprise-wide solutions that require much cross-functional integration.
