Moving Toward a Single Window for Paper Machine Control, 1990 TAPPI Conference Proceedings

Since the advent of the CRT based control systems, there has been an ongoing effort to simplify the maze of consoles an operator must contend with in the control room. Simplifying the man-machine interface--reducing the number of screens, display formats, and button layouts--will allow the operator to concentrate on managing the process instead of remembering which system or systems must be accessed and what combinations of key strokes are required in a given situation. This paper will discuss how a Distributed Control System (DCS) supplier and major gauging system suppliers are working in concert to provide this simpler interface: a single window for paper-machine control.
