Paper Mill Information and Control, 1992 TAPPI Conference Proceedings
Information and control systems in the paper mill are used to meet the customers’ needs for better service and higher quality products. The improved customer service requirements have resulted in shorter grade runs which drives the need for better grade change performance with minimum product losses. The improved quality requirements have resulted in the need for single window control systems in the form of interfaced and integrated distributed control systems that tie together the supervisory, regulatory and logic controls as well as the drive controls.
Most of these systems are installed on the paper machine itself. Now we are moving upstream to stock preparation and downstream to the winder and finishing operation. We are also moving up to information and roll handling systems and down to condition monitoring and drive systems. All of this is done to help improve quality and customer service.
