Emerging Technologies in Papermaking, 1992 TAPPI Conference Proceedings

With the turn of the century less than a decade away, it is interesting to speculate on what papermaking technologies will be available by the year 2000. This paper reviews the outlook for paper machine speeds and widths, basis weights and fiber utilization. It then reviews how these trends and emerging technologies will influence the paper machine designs of the next decade. Included is a review of stratified sheet forming, extended nip pressing and impulse drying, no-draw drying, surface treatment, soft calendering, and machine automation.

Some of these technologies will continue into the 21st century, but many other developments will take place. This paper examines some of the trends that are occurring in our industry and how those trends will influence pulp and papermaking over the next decade.
