Contact Angle, Near Infrared, and X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy of a Water-Based Latex Coating During Film Formation, 1995 Coating Fundamentals Symposium Proceedings

Contact angle, X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), and Near Infrared (NIR) are used to characterize the surface of a water-based acrylic latex coating during its film formation. The amount of surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), on the surface and the moisture content in the coating during drying play important roles in measured contact angle. Laboratory handsheets, pilot coated samples, and production-scale samples reveal qualitative relationships among them. Moisture level in the coating appears to be more dominant than SDS on the surface in de&mining the contact angle during film formation. Design of experiment (DOE) is used in production to predict drying parameters for desired contact angles. In addition, the disappearance of SDS on the coating surface is observed in a pilot sample with the drying conditions of the highest oven temperature and slowest web speed.
