Review of Wet Coating Structure: Pigment/Latex/Cobinder Interaction and its Impact on Rheology and Runnability, 1995 Coating Fundamentals Symposium Proceedings

Paper coating formulations are complex colloidal systems with dispersed pigment and binder particles as well as soluble cobinder species. The different components interact to generate different types of associations which give rise to a “wet coating structure.” This structure impacts the coating color rheology, dewatering rate, fiber coverage, dried coating porosity, etc. Often the wet coating structure is controlled by selecting the appropriate cobinder. During the coating process there is some breakdown of structure under shear followed by a recovery. The kinetics of struc-tural recovery during coating consolidation can be as im-portant as the static coating structure, particularly for healing of streaks and scratches. This paper presents a lit-erature review on “wet coating structure,” various charac-terization techniques with an emphasis on rheological measurements, and correlation of wet coating properties with high speed blade runnability.
