Dewatering of Coating Colors: A Filtration or Thickening Mechanism?, 1997 Advanced Coating Fundamentals Symposium Proceedings
The dynamic dewatering behaviour of two coating colors having different static dewatering properties was studied. The study was performed on a pilot coater at a coating speed of 200 and 400 rn/min, using two different substrates. To study the dynamic dewatering rate as a function of time, the scraping off method was used at different locations after the blade. Both the remaining coating color amount after scraping off and the solids content of the scraped off material was recorded. The results obtained suggest that during the consolidation process, an immobilised layer is formed at the paper/substrate interface. Furthermore it is shown that a transition zone between the immobilised layer and the bulk color does exist, but that this transition zone is thin in comparison to the immobilised layer thickness.
