In the metering size press (see Fig. 1) the coating colour is first premetered on the surface of a soft transfer roll by a rotating rod scraper and then transfered onto paper in a nip between the transfer roll and a backing roll. In this work we have studied the premetering process, which is of vital importance for the coating quality. In order to analyse the flow condition in the nip between the rod scraper and the transfer roll, we have made numerical calculations which include the flow of coating colour in the application chamber and in the nip, and the deformation of the roll surface due to the load applied to it by the fluid. The results of the computations were verified by measuring the pressure
distribution at the surface of the rotating rod scraper during the operation of the device. Similar measurements have been recently reported also by O. Reglat and P.A. Tanguy [1] .
