Coating Pore Structure Change After Printing, 2003 Advanced Coating Fundamentals Symposium Proceedings

The rate of ink setting is important for the printing process and influence the final product quality. Recent work hasshown that, on coated samples, pigments and resins remain at the top of the coated sample, even though the pigments and resins in some cases are smaller than the pores. The uptake of vehicle by different pore sizes has also been described, but there is a need to better understand the mechanisms of ink setting.

Four substrates, two coated and two uncoated, are printed with three different inks. The pore size distribution change of the samples was measured. Large pores are often not filled with pigments or vehicle, if the pore size is not too large. The pigments and resins seem to form a bridge or gel layer that holds pigment out from these pores. Large pores seem to be empty of oils also at long times. The fine pores seem to be able to pull vehicle from the larger pores, probably due to capillary pressures.
