Particle Packing of Blocky and Platey Pigments - A Comparison of Computer Simulations and Experimental Results, 2003 Advanced Coating Fundamentals Symposium Proceedings

Investigating the optimum blends of pigments with different particle size and shape distributions can require an extensive amount of effort. There is potential to reduce this workload and to investigate pigments with unusual characteristics by using computer simulation. This study compares the results of a coating study and simulation when using blends of high and low aspect ratio pigments – kaolin and ground calcium carbonate respectively. It has been found that the computer simulations can produce similar trends to those seen in the coating work. The relatively simple simulations used do not allow quantitative predictions to be made and it is unlikely that this will be possible until some practical problems, such as modelling larger particle size differences and how coating layers respond to calendering, have been overcome.
