Yankee Dryers: Acoustic Emission, 2000 Engineering Conference Proceedings

Dennis White--Acoustic emission (AE) has been used as a meticulous nondestructive examination (NDE) method for tissue and paper machine dryers for over 15 years. structural integrity of cast iron pressure retaining parts may be quickly determined. This paper reviews some of the results from that application by the author. Topics covered, relative to Yankee dryers, will be: rib cracks, spigot fit cracks, bolt cracks, metal-spray “cold splatter”, leaks, casting shrinkage, and AE use in lieu of hydrostatic testing for jurisdictional authorities.
