My TAPPI Story: McKenna Goulette
John Skelton, Mary M. Toney--The hydrodynamic conditions in a roll press nip involve moving reference frames, anisotropic compressible porous media, moving boundary conditions, and multi-phase flow and any reasonably complete analytical solution quickly leads to highly intractable equations. This complexity makes the nip an ideal subject for Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), and modem CFD software is capable of handling most of the relevant aspects of the problem. This paper describes our initial attempts to use CFD to elucidate some of the problems associated with a high-speed roll nip in the press section of a paper machine.
