Improving Water Absorbency Property of Tissue Products, 2000 Engineering Conference Proceedings

Jin Liu, Jeffery Hsieh--The water absorbency is an important property for tissue products. This paper reviews methods commonly employed by the tissue industry to improve the water absorbency property of the products. To a large extent, the water absorbency property is determined by the surface chemistry of pulp fibers. In order to improve water absorbency properties of tissue products, the optimization among the pulp furnish, paper machine white water chemistry and chemical additives is usually required. The product of two readily available tissue properties, i.e., total water absorbency and tissue bulk, is shown to be an indicator of paper porosity. The results show that beyond certain porosity, the tissue absorbency capacity will decrease.
