Effects of Electric Utility Deregulation on Industrial Power Cost Reduction Opportunities, 2000 Engineering Conference Proceedings
F. E. Bonsack--Deregulation of the electric utility industry is slowly spreading throughout the United States. The process is proceeding state-by-state, with ten states already fully deregulated, fourteen with legislation already in place to implement deregulation, fifteen with legislation pending, and the balance with little or no current activity (See Figure 1). Even those states with little activity are impacted by this basic change in the electric power market. One important impact is the resurgence of interest and investment potential for cogeneration options at industrial facilities throughout the country. Merchant plants, nationwide power marketing, the diversification of utility companies provide multiple opportunities for industrial process facilities to lower energy costs as well as to realize other benefits.
