Development of Paper Machine Dryer Inspection Guidelines, 2000 Engineering Conference Proceedings

Roland O’Brien-Bills, Nancy Hoffman, Richard H. DeWolf--Guidelines for Inspection and Nondestructive Examination of Paper Machine Dryers were developed to provide guidance to help prevent further catastrophic failures and economic loss within the pulp and paper industry. Conventional loss prevention and loss reduction methods were used to establish inspection frequency recommendations, what should be done, when, and by whom. Paper machine superintendents and machine tenders were identified as key personnel in the routine inspection process. Technical personnel with specialized equipment and training have a supporting role.

This paper presents a brief history of the events leading to the development of the guideline, an overview of the materials involved, and a review of the development process for establishing an industry guideline. It will also present the development of the industry guideline as an evolutionary document.
