Introduction to Process Simulation in Pulp & Paper Industry Capital Effectiveness and Design, 2000 Engineering Conference Proceedings
Bala Panchapakesan, Ph.D--Process simulation is a derived field from the disciplines of chemical engineering and computer science. The term "Process Simulation" refers to computer modeling of the manufacturing processes for design of new installations or analysis or troubleshooting of existing installations.
This paper highlights the role of process simulation in capital planning and capital effectiveness. The importance of process simulation as an engineering tool for improving operation of the existing facilities, design of new facilities and effective allocation of capital among the various manufacturing facilities are discussed. Examples of application of process simulation in different areas of the mill are discussed. For corporations requiring comparison of performance in different manufacturing units and looking for a basis for allocation of capital among these units, process simulation can be an effective tool. For existing facilities, methods of using process simulation for operation troubleshooting are discussed.
