Newsprint from a Cotton Field, 1990 Engineering Conference Proceedings
Partnering, team work, risk-sharing... all popular buzz words. Are they for real? Do they work? Is it easy?
The Newsprint South project tested and answered these questions, but raised many more that had not been asked.
Newsprint South, Inc., is a greenfield 630 TPD inte-grated TMP newsprint mill located in northern Mississippi. Its parent company, Mississippi Chemical Corporation, a fertilizer manufacturer, had no prior pulp or paper industry expertise, and yet the project:
- Was completed 2 months ahead of a fast track schedule.
- Was completed on budget.
- Is producing top quality newsprint at full designed capacity.
- Is 6 months ahead of an aggressively planned learning curve.
These factors indicate the overall success of the project. From a capital spending standpoint, the project is also a record making success. The project:
- Was completed in record time,
- Achieved record construction safety.
- Was recognized by the Construction Industry Institute (CII) as "The Implementation Success Story of 1989." and was featured at its Annual Conference.
