Using Modified Continuous Cooking (MCC) to Reduce AOX and Dioxins in Pulp Mill Effluent, 1991 Engineering Conference Proceedings

Modified Continuous Cooking (MCC) can be used to lower the digester Kappa number to previously unheard of levels (ie. less than 15 for softwood pulp). Mill experience is presented on how the MCC process was used for lowering AOX and dioxin levels in the mill effluent. Mill results are presented examining the effect of this technique on pulp bleaching, strength, and cleanliness. Mill data shows that bleached pulp strength was not adversely affected by cooking in the digester to 12 Kappa number. Bleach plant chemical consumption was significantly reduced while maintaining pulp brightness, and was as low as 2% active chlorine in the first stage. Pulp cleanliness was very good, as was the digester operation.
