My TAPPI Story: McKenna Goulette
Alloy 86, hereinafter referred to as Alloy 2 due to TAPPI Engineering Division policy on commercialism, is a patented duplex stainless steel that has high corrosion-fatigue strength and enhanced pitting corrosion resistance in highly corrosive acidic white waters containing chloride and thiosulfate anions. The effect of tensile residual stresses on the corrosion-fatigue performance of the alloy is shown by imposing a mean stress on axially loaded specimens. The effect of notch sensitivity on the corrosion-fatigue strength of this material is presented. Corrosion-fatigue crack propagation characteristics of this alloy are shown in comparison with other suction roll shell materials. The impact that high corrosion-fatigue crack propagation resistance and corrosion-fatigue strength have on material performance, shell design, and the material selection process for use in corrosive pulp and paper mill white water media is discussed.
