Corrosion Fatigue in several suction rolls in pH 4.7 pressate solution prompted a study of the stub shafts and roll ends.
Materials selection optimized cost, welding and fatigue considerations. Optional metallurgy (including stainless steel) was investigated and a third generation duplex alloy evaluated. The properties of the alloys (eg. composition, mechanical strength, and weldability) are discussed in detail. Weld overlay options are presented. Cracking and appropriate repair methods are described with techniques for residual stress minimization. In this instance physical geometry and surface quality contributed to high stress concentration and corrosion fatigue resistance. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) results are described in conjunction with stress and fatigue analysis. The analytical study indicates relative improvements in the re-design.
