Two different secondary air port configurations in recovery boilers are investigated computationally: (a) an interlaced configuration, and (b) an opposed configuration. The computations are carried out using a new code being developed at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of British Columbia. This code uses a multigrid approach, combined with segmentation techniques to provide the capability of local mesh refinement in regions of interest. The bed and the bull nose are not simulated. In addition to the momentum equations and the turbulence modeling, a tracer conservation equation is also solved to evaluate the mixing performance of the two different air port configurations. Velocity distributions, jet impingement on the walls, recirculation zones, turbulence intensity, and mixing are discussed.
