Interaction of Opposing Jets With Special Relevance to Recovery Furnaces, 1992 Engineering Conference Proceedings

The combustion air jets used in recovery furnaces are an important determinant of the furnace gas flow pattern and mixing. The air jet configurations often result in strong jet interaction, such as with interlaced or symmetrically opposing jets. This study examines a simplified target problem for isothermal, symmetrically opposing jets in cross flow, under conditions representative of furnace designs. Solutions are obtained for a three dimensional, time dependent, multi-grid numerical model. It is shown that with strong jet interaction in the simplified model, steady state flow is unstable and that there exists an unsteady, oscillatory flow. The implications of these findings for actual recovery furnaces are discussed.
