Influence of Nondestructive Test Procedure on Detection of Stress Corrosion Cracks, 1992 Engineering Conference Proceedings
The influence of different surface preparations (wire brushing, light grinding, sandblasting) and test methods (several forms of MT and PT) on detection of stress corrosion cracks at a weld "T" joint have been investigated. The "T" joint had been removed from a Kamyr digester carbon steel level tank scrapped due to stress corrosion cracking.
Several combinations of surface preparation and test method detected no cracking. The most successful combination performed detected over 225 cracks in the test area. These results have important implications for field inspections. It is concluded that surface material removal is required to detect cracking. This requirement is also illustrated by field examples of detection of stress corrosion cracking in austenitic stainless steels.
