Ingredients for Quality Engineering, 1992 Engineering Conference Proceedings
Quality, to the engineering consultant, is Customer Satisfaction. To assure satisfaction, quality goals must be Identified and communicated to the project team. The centerpiece of this definition for Bowater’s Recycle Fiber Project was the detailed Study and Estimate. This document very early defined the final product quality, the scope of the process and support facilities, budget, and schedule.
A mature and qualified engineering team, one of the basic ingredients for quality engineering, accepted the quality goals as their personal responsibility. The engineering team, along with the client and contractor, participated in an Alignment Process that further refined the quality objectives and defined the Charter for the Project. Trust and teamwork became a reality.
Tools were provided that promoted communication and reinforced teamwork Valuable constructability input was provided that resulted in cost and schedule savings.
An environment was maintained that focused on the quality goals of the project. Specific and consistent checking procedures were utilized to assure the quality of construction documents.
