Throughout the years, the paper industry has been striving to reduce paper machine downtime through better maintenance programs. A basic philosophy of yesteryear was to ’run it ’til it fails’. A great deal of this philosophy was attributes to and dictated by the demands of the industry. In the long run, this attitude proved to be costly to paper manufacturers in terms of switchgear repair cost, peripheral equipment repair and production loss. As recently as five years ago in the Union Carp Savannah Mill, paper machine electric downtime attributed to switchgear failure, was 10% of the total electric downtime in the paper mill, according to maintenance logs.
Later philosophies in switch gear optimization have shown that periodic preventive maintenance, good repair procedures and tracking failure trends can reduce downtime attributed to switchgear failures.
