Recovery Boiler Air Port Corrosion - Part 1: The Stability of NAOH and KOH in the Presence of CO2, 1992 Engineering Conference Proceedings

The kinetics of the carbonation of alkali hydroxides in CO2 was studied. In air, the carbonation of NaOH is negligible. NaOH melts at 320°C (608°F) and is relatively stable up to 750°C (138°F), above which temperature it vaporizes. In the presence of CO2, NaOH is carbonated at a rate which increases with temperature and CO2 concentration, and decreases in the presence of H2O vapour. The carbonation reaction is slow below 280°C (540°F), the eutectic temperature in the NaOH-Na2 CO3 system. Similar results were obtained for KOH in CO2 /N2 gas mixtures. The slow carbonation of NaOH and KOH in a gas containing leas than 1% CO2 may explain the existence of these hydroxides in deposits on the coldside of air port tubes, and hence their contribution to composite tube corrosion.
