Control Systems in the Year 2010, 1992 Engineering Conference Proceedings
Control systems will be remarkably different twenty years from now. This evolution will, in part, be market driven by the demands of the paper industry for better knowledge of, and control over, the factors affecting product quality and operating efficiency. Operator interface will benefit from advances in communications and visual resolution technology.
The technology advances that brought about the birth of DCS eighteen years ago will provide the catalyst in the development of control capabilities and a man/machine interface vastly different from the systems of today.
Control system hardware will become generic; hence hardware and platform become a non-issue. Proprietary systems will no longer exist. Hardware will be interchangeable and software will be universal. Vendors will develop proprietary application packages that will demonstrate a high level of expertise.
