My TAPPI Story: Naomi Gehling
Flow patterns and fiber orientation around the surface on the feed side of different screen baskets and the trajectory of fiber towards the openings on the screen baskets such as slots or holes were studied and characterized. It was found that, when a contoured basket was used, the degree of fiber stapling or hanging and throughput is strongly dependent upon the relative position of the contour, the opening and the eddy size and intensity in the wake zone. Meanwhile, the way that fibers migrate towards the openings is very sensitive to the height of the contours. These hydraulic and physical characteristics led to an understanding of the working mechanism inside a screen and facilitated screen design and basket selection for different applications with different furnishes.
