Felt Construction and Water Removal in a Press NIP, 1992 Engineering Conference Proceedings

First and second press felts with different surfaces and water permeability were used on a pilot paper machine to study the effect of felt roughness on dewatering of a newsprint web. A very rough and permeable first felt yielded a web with 7% lower solids content than that obtained with very smooth felt. No difference in the dewatering properties was observed for three second felts of different roughness, provided that the incoming web moisture was comparable with that found on commercial machines. When the felts remained in contact with the sheet after the press nip, rewetting occurred and the rate of post-nip rewet was found to depend on felt type.
