Degradation of Reinforced Concrete Machine Beams in the Dryer Sections of Paper Machines, 1992 Engineering Conference Proceedings
The deterioration of reinforced concrete support beams in paper machine dryer sections is commonplace on both conventional and tissue paper machines. This paper discusses the mechanisms of deterioration responsible for this structural concrete problem including sustained thermal effects on portland cement concrete, reactions with cement paste, carbonation enhancement, and low pH acidic attack of concrete. This degradation problem frequently results in the demise of the structural integrity and load carrying capacity of paper machine beams. Hence, it is a problem that deserves more routine attention within the industry. This paper presents information pertaining to assessment, rehabilitation, and prevention of this deterioration problem.
