How to Build a Jumbo Roll and Other Winding Tricks, 1993 Engineering Conference Proceedings

Douglas Roth

A new, high torque, center wind, duplex winder was designed to provide advanced roll structure control, enabling jumbo rolls to be wound with consistently reliable roll quality. The Bowater, Catawba installation of this winder is explored from both the mill’s viewpoint, as to why the winder was purchased, as well as the machine builders viewpoint, as to how the machine was designed and built. The machine’s productivity and quality results from the months of operation are analyzed and evaluated. The machine is designed to reduce winder related roll defects and improve jumbo roll runnability of light weight coated paper in the pressrooms.
