Determining the best wiring practice for Class 1 and Class 3 circuits can become more involved for chemical recovery boilers and other safety and life hazard equipment. Without proper planning, considerable money can be spent later in installation in order to meet Article 725 of the 1993 National Electrical Code. This paper will identify Class 1 and Class 3 circuits. It will examine wiring problems presented in safety and control equipment wiring. It is assumed that the mill normally uses shielded cable in cable tray. This paper becomes a non-issue if only conduit is installed throughout.
