How can we deal with the ever- increasing amount of solid waste being generated in this country? A part of the solution is to remove a major constituent of this solid waste flow and turn it into a valuable useable product. This paper describes the wastepaper sorting, deinking and paper machine trials that formed the basis of design for the Morrisville Paper Company’s deinked market pulp facility. This facility is designed to produce a deinked market pulp from sorted office wastepaper, the urban forest. As a result, wastepaper will be removed from the solid waste stream going to landfill, and a valuable pulp source for the production of fine paper and other grades will be created.
