Deinking Laser-Print Paper Using Ultrasound, 1993 Engineering Conference Proceedings
Laser-printed pulp is distinguished by large, flat, plate-like ink particles. These particles are much more difficult to remove than conventional ink particles. It was shown in this research study that ultrasound waves can, however, split apart and loosen these tenacious particles.
Use of a particle-size analysis system suggested that frequencies of 22 kHz, 34 kHz, and 54 kHz each affected particles of different size ranges. This implies that a commercially feasible ultrasound deinking process might be developed as a stand-alone treatment method for laser-print papers or as a polishing step for mixed waste paper grades to improve the overall pulp quality.
