New Headbox Design Featuring Consistency Profiling Decoupled from Fiber Orientation Response, 1994 Engineering Conference Proceedings

S. B. Pantaleo

The challenge of good CD basis weight profile has heightened in recent years particularly as the on-machine vision of profiles has improved. Modern scanning systems now provide profile data with much higher resolution than that influenced by conventional slice systems. A new headbox design has been created to provide substantially narrower basis weight response than any slice bending system currently available. Beyond profiling advancements, the headbox design decouples, basis weight profiling from fiber orientation profile response. An active system is incorporated to provide on-the-run adjustment of fiber orientation profile for sensitive grades such a linerboard, copy paper and forms bond.
