Tires are a good fuel because they are a petroleum based product. The problem combusting tires is wire removal from the combustion process. One way to minimize this problems is to remove the wire and shred the tires into small chips before combustion (tire derived fuel). This is an expensive process.
One combustion process capable of burning larger tire pieces without wire removal is the Fast Internal Circulating Be (FICB) technology. The presented information describes this combustion process and boiler design. Also included is information from three major test burns which verified wire removal from the boiler and characterized the combustion process and emissions.
The value of the FICB technology to the pulp and paper industry is a power boiler designed to burn the traditional fuels of wood, bark, woodwaste and sludge, also capable of burning significant input on tires. Tire input either offsets expensive fossil fuels or is the enhancement for very low heating value fuels.
