Metallurgical Assessment of Generating Bank Corrosion in a West Coast Power Boiler, 1995 Engineering Conference Proceedings

H.A. Dykstra

Bacon Donaldson

A West Coast pulp and paper mill experienced rapid material loss of the generating bank section in their power boiler. Damage was most pronounced at areas affected by the sootblowers. All of the tubes were replaced and localized weld build-up was performed on the drums. The boiler had been in service for less than four years. A failure analysis was performed to determine the cause for thinning and to relate the operating environment to the conditions necessary for rapid corrosion. Mitigation techniques are discussed.
