The Dow Chemical Co.
It is anticipated that regulatory and market forces will cause the industry to move towards "totally chlorine free" (TCF) pulp bleaching processes. Alkaline hydrogen peroxide, an alternate bleaching process, is generally regarded as less corrosive than chlorine and chlorine dioxide bleaching processes, however little data exists on its corrosive effects on fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP). This paper describes the resistance of various fiberglass reinforced composites to corrosive attack by alkaline hydrogen peroxide. Information is presented on the results of laboratory exposure testing and test coupons exposed in a commercial pulp bleaching plant. The history of FRP piping in an alternating environment of chlorine dioxide and alkaline hydrogen peroxide is also discussed. Significant differences were seen in the corrosion-resistant properties of the resins tested.
