My TAPPI Story: Dave Maddux
An improved quality of wrought duplex stainless steel suction roll shells has recently been introduced on the market. By applying a special steelmaking technology a superior machinability has been achieved. The paper describes the different manufacturing steps from steelmaking through hot rolling, forming, welding, annealing and machining. A unique annealing practice in combination with the good machinability guarantees very low residual stresses. This is illustrated by tests with the Ring-Core method. The resulting materials properties are presented for two duplex stainless steels, SRG™ (3RE60) and SRG Plus TM (2205). Data on mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, residual stresses, and corrosion fatigue in synthetic white water are given.
