Reducing Project Costs Through the Use of New Engineering Tools, 1996 Engineering Conference Proceedings
Over the past nine years, Parsons Main has expended considerable effort to develop a new computer-based technology which improves the efficiency of the engineering process in the preparation of construction information packages. Additionally, the use of the technology can significantly reduce construction costs during the implementation of a project, as well as support operations and maintenance during the life of the plant. This paper identifies some real savings that have been measured on the projects completed for Procter & Gamble using the new technology. The intent of this paper is not to discuss, other than superficially, the computer technology involved, but to focus on learnings acquired from the use of this technology and results achieved from several projects. One $9 million project concerning the installation of an 80,000 lbs/hr high purity steam plant is described in detail. It is hoped that through a discussion of these specific examples, others will be encouraged to adopt the use of this tool on a selective basis. It is my belief that similar results are within grasp for all who execute projects whether they be ‘green-field” or refurbishment. It is also my belief that what is now available is just the tip of the ice berg, and this technology will surely revolutionize the engineering process to produce a discernible step change in what we currently call the conventional engineering process - read on!
